Importance of Fashion

FAQs:

1 - What does fashion say about the person?

Fashion or in other words, clothing says a lot of things about the person. According to Morris, Tracy L., Joan Gorham, Stanley H. Cohen, and Drew Huffman, in an article called "Fashion in the Classroom: Effects of Attire on Student Perceptions of Instructors in College Classes". They concluded that "The symbolism's of clothing are: a) traditions, b) self-beatification, c) cultural values and sexual identity, d) authority, and e) acquisition of status". Clothing also is considered one of the nonverbal languages. They also said that it can be either intentionally or unintentionally. People also make decisions about others based on only clothing, they are ten things: economic level, educational level, trustworthiness, social position, sophistication level, economic background, social background, educational background, success level, and moral character. Finally clothing influences four different judgments: credibility, likability, interpersonal attractiveness, and dominance.
Tanasychuk (2003) published an article called "Author Says We're all Fashion Victims" in the Sun Sentinel saying how we are all fashion victims in a way. This is true if a person looks at his/her closet and feels frustration of not having enough clothes then the person is a fashion victim of having an obsession with clothing.

2 - How important should fashion be?

Fashion should be important to everyone. But once it goes in excess and too far then it would be bad. If that does happen then according to Schiermer (2010) the term “fashion victim” could be used. This is when a person is stuck in this spiral of having and wanting more ‘objects’. Schiermer also defined fashion victim as when these objects make the person loose his/her individuality and make people fall into the same category (for example, who has never owned a pair of Lee jeans in their life?). Fashion is important but a person should keep his/her own individual identity or else we will be just like robots.

3 - Does a person have to wear the latest trend in order to be fashionable?

No, of course not. Fashion is just new things that company's do so they could profit from it, because don't forget whatever you think the goal of these designers is, it's ultimately to gain profit. That is why they have new seasons and they always use completely different color and material so a person would be tempted to buy the new season items. To be fashionable, the only thing a person should do is find something that looks good on him/her. Not what everyone else is wearing. Some people look good in shorts, while others don't. Some people look good in leggings while others should wear a long shirt if they were to wear leggings. Fashion is just there to satisfy taste, preference, and offer a lot of different options. Therefore, each person should know what he/she should wear and not be driven by only fashion.

4 - Does it matter what we wear to a job interview?

Yes, it does. What a person wears really does affect the probability of being hired or not. The way a person dresses shows the company if the person might be a potential employee and whether he/she would be a good image representing the company. If a person was not able to follow the dress code for the interview then that is giving a signal the person cannot follow rules properly. Think about a person wearing a dirty shirt or just looks sloppy, what kind of thought comes to mind? This tells the employer he/she is untidy in her work and he/she is probably sloppy in everything they do. On the other hand, if a person shows up with a perfect fitting outfit and he/she is clean and neat, the person would be signaling he/she could follow rules correctly, will be tidy in his/her work, and will represent the company in the best possible way. 5 - Why do some employers choose to have some kind of dress code?

According to a article in the Los Angeles Times, "Set Dress Code to Fix Attire Problem" by Karen Klein, she solved this problem of employees coming too sloppy or overly casual to work is to set a dress code. This should be done especially if customers come to the office then all employees should dress properly in order to represent the company in the best way possible.
