Importance of Fashion

Fashion With a New Lens

Fashion does not only mean clothing; it could mean anything that people consider to express themselves with. Also, fashion differs from one generation to another, what was once not accepted in the past may be accepted nowadays. Some examples are:

  • Tammy Faye Bakker:
She was 4 feet 11 inches and was known for appearing on camera in very heavy makeup and overstated outfits. But both of these made her the person that everyone knows today. According to an article in the New York Times called Emotive Evangelist, Dies by Anita Gates, Tammy Faye was once asked to remove her false eyelashes but she refused to, and said, "without my eyelashes, I wouldn't be Tammy Faye"  (Gates, 2007). This shows us that not only clothing can be part of the person's personality, but also all of the extras.

  • Dolly Parton:
This curvy singer is best known for huge blond hair, excessive make-up, and big bosom. Without them Dolly Parton wouldn't be who she is.

  • Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen:
As the sisters have matured, there has been great interest in their fashion choices. The New York Times declared Mary-Kate as a fashion icon for her signature look of "homeless", which became famous between celebrities and fans alike ("Mary-Kate Olsen" 2009). This shows us that celebrities may have some exceptions for the way they dress. People have a different perspective of viewing these celebrities and what they wear.

  • Lady Gaga:
The way people consider fashion is different than what the celebrity Lady Gaga considers it to be. Her choice of outfits makes her stand out from everyone else and make every appearance of her memorable. This is due to the different combinations she chooses and things that no one would ever wear (like the way she does her hair and makeup, and also her clothing). One of her fashion choices were to wear wearing a meat outfit, it was made out of raw meat. She wore it as a dress and added a purse and hat to go with it (also made out of raw meat).

  • Body modification:
Body modification in general is considered fashion per se. Most people may not understand it or like it, but to some people it is the best way they could express themselves. It ranges from tattoos to piercings to even changing some body parts (example: mouth, ears, tongue, eyes, etc…..).

  • Others:
Some people fashion with their hair styles. Others just express themselves with their hair length. Men express themselves with their facial hair and how they groom it. For women, they express themselves not only with their hair and make-up, but also with their nails. Every person has their own way in expressing themselves, that’s what makes every person special in his/her own way.
